XPSP2 security updates

In the last month I have found that the bundle of Microsoft security updates
following the installation of XPSP2 has caused multiple applications to fail.
This includes HP Director, (imaging software), IE script errors, NAV internal
errors, "Red X" graphics, loss of folders & items in Organize Favorites
window, etc. I have verified this by un-installing XPSP2, problem disappears,
re-installing XPSP2, problem still resolved, then when I run Automatic
Updates and re-boot same problems re-appear. I have found this problem on
multiple PC's. Any thoughts from Microsoft?

You need to contact the Software Applications manufacturer not
Microsoft. Microsoft is only responsible for Operating System and its
own applications; SP2 has been around for more than a year and other
software manufacturers had enought time to issue software patches to run
on SP2.

After SP2 there have been many programs stop
working. Check their website for update
software and/or drivers.

The fix detailed in 909889 involving the Registry and OLE32.DLL is available
at http://patch-info.de/IE/Downloads/OLEfix.zip and
http://www.dougknox.com/xp/utils/kb896688_fix.zip (a small VB app that
checks the 4 values and offers a repair option if any of them are
incorrect).

As in the case of HP Director Imaging app, HP says they don't know why this
is happening but download the latest MDAC, which is already in XPSP2, this is
not a fix.

Hi,

Did you try the OLE registry fix posted by both PA Bear and Ramesh?

Download the file OLEfix.zip available here (it is a registry file
that origin from MS Support, and it has fixed an ActiveX problem
for several people, getting this problem after installing KB896688):

http://patch-info.de/IE/Downloads/OLEfix.zip

Extract it and double click the contained OLEfix.reg file. Click Yes
on the dialog box that asks you if you are sure to add the information
in OLEfix.reg to the registry.

You may have to reboot your machine afterwards.

I will try it, however I just went back to customer's home, same problem
because auto updates were re-activated, uninstalled XPSP2, and found 896688
but original problems are now working. I didn't reinstall XPSP2 because
customer needs HP software to work Thanks for the info -
