Running XPSP2 with all hotfixes. Have had a series of OS problems / errors
over a few months - e.g., corrupted system files (sys.ini, keyboard driver,
etc.). Swapped out most hardware - no problems found. With lots of work,
90% of problems are gone. But, I DON'T want to reinstall OS.
Current intermittent problem - installing new drivers/software. Examples:
1) when first installing HP Z3100 plotter s/w, get dialog box: "WMI not
available." Looking in wmiprov.log (win\system32\wbem\logs) I see this error
line becoming more frequent: (Tue Feb 05 08:25:07 2008.288265) : WDM call
returned error: 4200.
Try again and the package seems to install fine.
2) recent problems with Outlook, seemingly choking on my 5GB OST local file,
so I updated to Office 2007. Outlook tells me: 'Click Here to Enable Instant
Search.' I do so and it says 'Outlook must be restarted.' Restart, but
still no instant search - same instructions to 'click here.' This
round-robin goes on forever.
Any advice ? TIA.
