just sent away one of my ofc machines (new in 2005) for an
overhaul.....
gave the guy my brand new 200gig drive out of the box.....it now shows
127gig....

that's a heck of a partition LOL

Any ideas please how to fix, what to do besides torture the computer
tech ? ;)

update
I also gave him addl 1gig ram PC333 for the machine, menmory was
corect, only shows original 480 ram........

Check the Service Pack level of the Windows installation, if none are
installed install the latest (SP2). Go to Microsoft.com and search for
"48-bit lba" and you will find the answer to your questions regarding
disks larger than 137GB. You said "127gig" in your post, is that a
typo? Did you mean 137gigs?

what brand of sata drive is it (wd, seagate)??
is there a jumper on it to limit the size to 140g for older motherboards? if
so what is it set to? what version of xp is it (xpsp1 upgrd to sp2)?
what is shown in disk management for the drive?

take a look at computer management console and see how the system is
reporting the drive.
click on start > right click 'My Computer' > click on 'Manage'
then select 'Disk Management'
and that should show you how the disk is set up. if you have any unallocated
space you can turn it into a logical drive if you want. if not, and you want
all 200GB (remember that you will not have 200GB some is lost from mfg fault
and some is lost through formatting - count on 7% loss) for the system then
you will either take it back to the tech or get a third aprty partition tool
that will let you expand that partition.
if you choose to make a logical drive:
right click in the unallocated space and click 'New Partition'
then just follow the prompts and take the default settings.

See if any of the following info is relevant to your situation...

There are two basic requirements for the XP OS to recognize the full
capacity of large-capacity disks, i.e., disks > 137 GB (roughly 127 GB
binary)...

1. The motherboard's BIOS must support large-capacity disks. Virtually all
motherboards manufactured over the past 4 or 5 years have this capability.
Frequently a BIOS upgrade is available for older motherboards to provide
this capability if not originally present, and,
2. The XP OS must contain SP1 and/or SP2 at the time the HDD is installed.

If the motherboard's BIOS does not support large-capacity disks and there is
no BIOS upgrade to provide this capability, the only other practical course
of action is to purchase a PCI controller card having this capability and
installing it in the PC.

If the XP OS did not include SP1 and/or SP2 at the time the HDD was
installed, and you later install SP1 or SP2 to the OS, then the full
capacity of the HDD will be recognized, however, the additional disk space
above the 137 GB or 127 GB (approx) originally recognized will be
"unallocated space", i.e., disk space that you can partition/format using
XP's Disk Management utility.

thanks all for the replies.........what a freakin day......

Found that the memory I gave him he didn't put in after all, I had him
come over and put it in (I know how to do it but it was HIS job).....he
turned it on, it started beeping..he said he'd be back....that was 8
hrs.ago........that is all it does now is beep.

I just now decided to take out the new memory and turned everything
back on, it still beeps and beeps.........

Before he came over and put the memory in I did find
my Docs and Setts are all skewed up,
No desktop tab on rtclick at Desktop/Properties
History won't keep while surfing, as soona s you close the browser, it
is brand new....
search assistant won't.
No local Settings or ApplicationData
half of my progs that worked the other day don't at all now.

I had my sfc/scannow all set up before, and now it doesn't so will be
going back thru that too.

It has XPHome on it, I am thinking about ripping the machine out by the
throat, ..............or maybe that is what I will do to him (hmm...now
THERE'S a thought)

So a couple yrs.ago I bought a brand new boxed student xppro for $10.00
at a garage sale, please let me know how I can install that......I have
all data backed up elsewhere, please let me know what all I can do
(above) and install xppro. Have never ever been at this crossroads
before. Am hoping this all will be a quick fix or two.

Much deep thanks.

Do as follows:

Start/run/regedit
(if unsure export registry for safety)
select HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE
navigate to system/services/atapi/parameters or
system/currentcontrolset/services/atapi/parameters
right click for new
Select Dword name it EnableBigLba (take note of case)
set value to 1
end regedit
reboot
