XPe Trial 120-Day Remote-Boot Installation Problem

Guest

I've just signed up for a trial run at XPe to play with, but after installing all the designing tools and db parts i'm left with installing the Remote-Boot Setup. However when I click the Setup link to get going it tells me the following:

Windows Installer:
This installation package could not be opened. Verify that the package exists and that you can access it, or contact the application vendor to verify that this is a valid Windows Installer package.
[OK]

Any ideas as i'm somewhat lost. Was there additional files I was supposed to have?

Thanks for the support,

I guess what I left out is that i'm running the dev. platform on a WindowsXP Pro OS. Do I need to be running a MSoft Server system? ie: 2K or 2K3?

Thanks!

Jordan,

For the RBS you don't need a server machine.

However, if you plan to use MS DHCP (and you probably will if you use PXE environment), you will need a server.

Awesome, thanks for the swift reply. That all makes sense, especially considering there's extra params I need to pass off as a proper dhcp server.

On a side note, i've just completed a simple build using the Target Designer application, and it's created what looks like an image of a drive. How do I go about getting that put on a bootable CD or even just transfering that manually to another system?

Any pointers would be appreciated.

Thanks again,
Jordan Williams

How do I go about getting that put on a bootable CD

El Torito CD:
http://msdn.microsoft.com/library/en-us/xpehelp/html/xeconElToritoCDAsDisk.asp
or even just transfering that manually to another system?

Simpel xcopy will work assuming you prepeare the target storage:
partitioning, FAT/bootprep or NTFS, etc..

Any pointers would be appreciated.

You questions are very basic so far. I'd reccond you to read the XPe docs.
Also, MS tutorial are helpful for beginners:

Konstantin,
Sorry for possibly a stupid question,
I have found this download link a while ago when a friend of mine has a same
issue as OP. Since then I was wandering about following:

From link you mentioned:
YOU MAY NOT PROVIDE THIS UPDATE OR THE LOCATION (URL) OF THIS UPDATE TO ANY
THIRD PARTIES.
What does it mean?? Especially regarding "location (url)" part... What a
strange requirement is this?! Is this some strange licensing issue? Or is
this just my bad(?) english?

Hi Alexander.

This is question for layers since they are the only one who can make any sense of this.

I guess that it mean that you can not give someone exe file or URL link to exe file.
But providing URL to page that says this text is probably ok, since it is not an binary itself, and also it can be found trough
search.

Best regards,
Slobodan

PS:
This is only my interpretation, and it might not be accurate at all.

Thanks, Slobodan.

Sometimes (well, most of the time) layers talk their own language that I do
not even try to comprehend... This applies to "CLA for ES" too which I was
trying to read through and understand two times.. mostly unsuccesssfully :)

Hi Alexander,

I think it just says that you cannot redistribute the update binary and,
also, you cannot have the URL link on your web sites (you may just point out
that there is such QFE, though). Anyway, it is hard to translate the
statement and I'd rather consult with a lawyer.

Sorry, I am not good at legal stuff. I am just a developer :)

Hi Konstantin,

Throw at us DDK, SDK, DataSheets, or any other "ugly" thing and there probably would not be any problems to understand it.
But layer talks is very strange no matter what language they claim to speak ;-)

Best regards,
Slobodan
