XPCOM not responding

My system starts doing strange things like not connecting to email.
The only option is to reboot.
When I do I get a msg that XPCOM is not responding.
When it reboots everything is fine.

What does XPCOM do?
What causes XPCOM to get into a non-responding mode?
What can I do to fix it?

Used in Mozilla.
