“DO NOT CLICK DOWNLOAD IF YOU ARE UPDATING JUST ONE COMPUTER: A
smaller, more appropriate download is now available on Windows Update”

However, Windows Update usually downloads and installs immediately. I
do not wish to install yet, I just want to download it for my single
PC, preferably the smaller download.

What’s the best approach?
Where can I dowload the small update from (i.e. which link)?

The link that you have is fine. The advice given of 'do not click download
etc' is because this actually download is meant for IT professionals with
more than one computer to update - it also contains the 'full' update
package. I use it on a single machine, so there is no problem. It is also a
good idea to have a CD of the full service pack anyway.

If you want the 'smaller' file then you will have to use Windows Update and
that, of course, will update your system immediately.

You don't download it as a separate entity from Windows update. You simply
install it from Windows update.

There is nothing wrong with using the downloadable version. Many of us do.

The "smaller" download is not from a link. The Windows Update web
site will take an inventory of what your XP needs and then only
install the those updates.

I would download the full update file and save it to disk for future
use.

One future use is to "slipstream" the service pack. Slipstreaming is
a method of creating an updated XP install CD that has the "service
pack" preinstalled into it.

My suggestion for this is to set automatic updates to download but ask for
conformation from any pre XPSP3.
This way the computer downloads and caches it in (I think) your temporary
Internet folder. You can copy the update from there.

Download the .iso from here:

Burn it to CD, now you have a Service Pack 3 install CD that you can use to
update any xp install or use it to slipstream to your original XP install
disk.
