Microsoft now offers sp3 for sale and download. The download they say is not
reccomended for 1 computer but mutipal computers. The cost is nonimal 3.00
to buy. I e-mailed Microsoft but do not know how lond it will take to get an

SP3 includes SP2 and all post-SP2 updates; SP2 includes SP1 and all post-SP1
updates; SP1 includes all updates since WinXP was released.

You must be running WinXP SP1 or WinXP SP2 to be able to install SP3 via the
316.4MB download or the CD (which contains the same file).

It's OK to use the full-file 316.4 MB installer if you'd like to install
WinXP SP3 manually; however the installer used by Windows Update or
Automatic Updates to install SP3 will be much, much smaller (~35MB).

And to answer your first question, SP3 is cumulative, which means that
it has everything that was in SP1 and SP2.

"Windows XP SP3 includes all previously released updates for the
operating system, in addition to a small number of new updates. Windows
XP SP3 will not significantly change the Windows XP experience."

However, even though SP3 "includes all previously released updates," you
*must* have at least SP1 installed before you install SP3, and having
SP2 is "recommended." See

You can buy the SP3 CD, you can download an iso file to create your own
SP3 CD, or you can go to Windows Update and get it that way. See

methods will update a system (or systems) to XP SP3. MS recommends
using Windows Update for one computer because WU does some checking
before it goes ahead and lets you update. If you're responsible for
updating multiple computers and know what you're doing, it's far faster

computer to WU.

The reason I am having the problem is my copy of xp pro was before sp1. When
I try to install everything goes good till I get to windows and about half
way through sp2 it starts saying can not find files check source but windows
update is the source so that is my problem.

If you're having problems with use of the download, use the CD that MS
offers for SP3. That was $10.00 last I looked. Highly recommeded by myself
for those with phone modems and problematic cable//SAT connections.

SP3 replaces many SP1/SP2 system files, and their subsequent updates within
that period. And, provide such updates subsequent that SP3 that does not
address specifically. Does not update IE or other MS applications withiin
XP. Those updates are separate from the XP SPs, though some are claimed
"critical updates". Go figure.

Yes I got that fixed. And messed it up trying to remove some ATI drivers
that windows would not remove after I installed a new video card.

talk to a human to make sure sp3 will install without sp1 or 2 being
installed. If not I will have to maybe order two disk. My copy was before
sp1. I have an excellant connection to the internet cable 7 megs. and I just
reloaded it about six or eight weeks ago no problem. I am going to get the
disk. I don't like Linux but I needed to do some stuff online and I put it
on there. I have Windows 95 on floppies maybe I should have installed that.

the machine's still infected. Do NOT attempt to install any Service Packs
until an expert has reviewed your HijackThis log, etc., and has given the
machine a clean bill of health.

Or format & reinstall Windows (again). A Repair Install will NOT help!

conjunction with some other utilities). HijackThis will NOT fix anything on
its own, but it will help you to both identify and remove any
hijackware/spyware with assistance from an expert. **Post your log to

SP3 requires that the system be running at least SP1 before the installation
of SP3 starts.

To use the SP3 update CD in an XP environment, XP has to contain SP version
1A or higher. Doesn't matter if SP3 is downloaded or on a CD.

To implement SP3 with an original XP retail or OEM generic installation CD,
the 2 must be merged with a program called autostreamer for instance. It
will create an image of a CD that can be burned for use. The resulting CD
can be used at that point to install XP at the SP3 level from scratch.

Win95/98/ME cannot effectively use over 512MB of RAM without some
modification. Go to the win98.gen_discussion newsgroup for details. There
are other concerns as well if you have PC hardware related to USB or
firewire or SATA for instance.

But PA Bear I formated it 5 times I worked on it 20 hours. I do not even
know how to do a repair. Of all the commands I did not see any that seem
to suggest repair. I formated C:\ Five times.

If you will have WinXP Gold (no Service Packs) after doing another format &
reinstall, proceed as follows:

1. Before connecting the machine to the internet, enable the Internet
Connection Firewall.

2. Complete Steps #1 thru #6 in this post of mine:

[If you have SP2 and SP3 on CDs, use them instead of downloading the
installers. Skip SP1.]

3. Install a reliable anti-virus application and manually update it to the
latest definitions. If cost is a factor, I can recommend Avira AntiVir or
Avast 4 (free); I would not recommend AVG Free.

NB: Don't do *anything* else online or connect to any networks until you've
completed all of the above!

NB: If you've not Reset or Reinstalled your router, I would connect directly
via the modem until you've completed all of the above. Then Reinstall the
router.

NB: If the machine was on a network when it got infected, do NOT reconnect
it to that network unless those machines have been cleaned, too!
