Had a power supply failure when I shut down. Spent a lot of time figuring
out it was the power supply. Got a new power supply but now the windows hard
drives will not boot. Have 2 hd & one is Linux (ubuntu). The ubuntu drive
will boot no problem. I can see the hd (xp) that will not boot has the files
that I can see & extract. So most of the drive is ok (did a chkdsk) what do
I need to do to the hd so that I can boot it? Got any ideas? TIA

You need to tell us what exactly happens during the boot process and how far
it gets.

If you removed the Hard Drives to replace the Power Supply, you need to make
sure the HDs are back in the same order they were before, you also need to
check the power and digital connections to the HD for snug fit. If
everything checks ok, you need to fix the boot sector with the Windows XP
CD, from the Recovery Console and use the commands FIXMBR, followed by
FIXBOOT.

Ok thanks. I tried that but still no banana.

I fail very early. I get the line @ the bottom of the screen with the bars
erasing the line so its a solid white line & then nothing. After 10 min I
gave up & shut the power :-(.

This probably means that the registry is damaged. I would try this, in the
following order:
- Click F8 several times during the early boot phase.
- When you see a menu, select "Last known good configuration"
- If this does not work, select "Safe Mode".

I'd like to ask, did you shutdown normally or in hibernation mode the last
time, or did you always get the white progress bar during the boot?.. if the
last shutdown was in hibernation, you could try deleting the
"C:\hiberfil.sys" file from Ubuntu.

I have had this problem a few times in the past and have always managed to
make it load after 15-30 minutes of trying, so you may have to keep trying
for longer than 10 minutes.

If the hibernation is not involved, the white progress bar could be related
to a driver issue. The question would be which driver, but maybe you can
determine it if you had any hadware issues before the last shutdown.
