XP Write caching & performance

I've been noticing that my computer is accessing things a bit slowly.
Sometimes it takes a second or two to switch applications and bring up
menus. After some use it can slow down much more than that.

I have just disabled write caching and things have speeded up
considerably. Is this a sign of a deep seated problem?

I have a 1.8Ghz processor and 768MB of ram.

Any help would be appreciated

What you have described is not necessarily the sign of a problem.
Disabling write caching can lead to incomplete writes.

That's rather surprising, I'd have thought that write-caching was the
'faster but more risky' option. So, not caching writes could potentially
corrupt files?

Thanks for the interest in my problem. I too was surprised to read
this response as I thought the riskier option was to enable
write-caching. I've enabled it again but I was surprised to find that
disabling it speeded things up rather than slowing them down as I
expected.
