XP Word Header protection & contents

jas

I have general password protected files with Read Only enabled but how to do
two things:

1. How do i protect the (3) field headers (Autotext and Normal.dot fields)
from being changed by a user (however if possible, allow only the filename
to be changed according to the name of the word file in explorer for the
field in headers)?
ie. Prevent a user from changing in the header "Author" (normal.dot) and
"Created on" (manual Autotext) entries (but the filename [normal.dot] can be
renamed when the file is renamed from explorer). Not all documnets require
"Created on" fields so this is to be manually inserted.

2. Prevent the user from saving the Read Only file with a different name as
a new filename (Save As). I do not want to allow duplicate files to be saved
where eventually the contents can be entirely altered keeping point 1 above
in mind.
ie. Someone opens the file as read only. They make changes to the content
(and headers) then Save As a different file. Want to prevent this change of
content.

I think i have explained well enough the descriptions?
Thanks for any help you can suggest.

It is _not_ a good idea to have any text (including headers/footers) in
normal.dot.

So, I would recommend creating two templates, one with a createdate field,
one without, in the header and having people use those when starting new
documents.

for ideas on methods of keeping people from changing headers.

See the MVP FAQ: <URL: http://www.mvps.org/word/> which is awesome!
