I am having trouble with a machine running Windows XP Home. I cannot install
updates on it. When I go to Windows site and scan for updates, the first one
it says to install is SP 1. When I click on the "Install Now" button,
nothing happens. I have checked my internet connections, shut of NAV, etc.
But still no go. Any suggestions?

Also, the same machine won't shut down or restart. It does nothing.
Occaisionally it will shut itself down just all of a sudden (it says Win
run32 or something like that has caused an error, it has never done it when
I am sitting at that computer, I just barely saw that message once when I
happened to turn from another computer), then it restarts. Help!!

Hi Rebecca,

This is the short version of steps to troubleshoot access problems:

Disable any/all of the following installed on your system:

- firewall (even the native one)
- antivirus software
- popup stopper
- download manager

Go to the Control Panel/Internet Options, click on "languages" and make sure
at least your default language is installed.

Check the Date & Time applet and make sure that the day/month, and
especially year are correct, if you are out of date by 90 days or more you
will not see any updates.

Add these sites to the list of trusted sites under Internet Options/security
in the Control Panel:

https://Windowsupdate.microsoft.com
https://V4.Windowsupdate.microsoft.com
https://Download.Windowsupdate.com
https://a248.e.akamai.net

Then retry Windows Update. If this doesn't help, try more troubleshooters
