XP wont start up

I have XP system that won't start up. I can get to the restore but it looks
like all my data files would be deleted also. Any one have any suggestions
what to try before I reformat my hard drive.
By the way, this question is not being sent from my computer.

Tap F8 on start up,select safe mode with networking,enter xp as administrator,
run system restore.If restore isnt an option,install xp cd,exit the info
page,
go to run,type:cmd In cmd type:Sfc /Scannow When the utility is thru,type:
CHKDSK C: /F Agree to restart,type:EXIT Restart computer,remove cd.Youre
other option,boot to xp cd,recovery,select 1 Press enter for password,type:
CHKDSK C: /R
