xp wont recover..HELP

Hi. My pc would not turn off or restart. So i followed the links on the
discussion groups...they did not work. I then tried the last
suggestion...recovery fr XP disc.
Loaded disc....selected recover...started well. It now get to 34 mins
remaining (loading devices) and it stops. screen goes black...few
seconds..then restarts.... it then tries to restart installation... failing
at the same point .....must of tried 10 times...any ideas please. I know a
format and clean instal would probably fix it but i'd rather keep the data (
but i do have backups)
