XP won't recognize Windows 98 for multi-boot

I just purchased a computer that had XP home edition
already installed (Compaq S5100NX). It is replacing an
older computer (HP with 75Mhz pentium) that has Windows 98
on a 20GB Maxtor drive. I have put the old drive in the
new machine as a slaved drive and XP does not recognize
the fact that Windows 98 is on that drive. It does
recognize the files there just fine but not the operating
system. How can I get XP to recognize the older operating
system? It has some software that will not run on XP
(even in the "compatible" mode) so until it is upgraded I
need to be able to set up the dual boot options. I did
try to boot directly from the old drive on the new machine
but it gives me a non-system error. Do I have an issue
with XP or the BIOS? Or both?
