XP won't boot up after installing SP2

I began by erasing and reformatting my 2 HDD's. Started with a fresh install
of WindowsXP-SP1a. Installed motherboard drivers, DirectX 9c, then video
drivers. Next I ran the SP2 setup. It appeared to be installing corectly,
there were no error messages of any kind. When I rebooted after the SP2
installation, it would NOT boot up into Windows at all, not matter what I
tried, Safe Mode, Last good configuration....nothing worked. Could only pull
the plug to shut the system down.

Any ideas out there??

Thank you

I would recommend to install SP2 directly after XP installation. Did you install SP2 connected to the Internet?

Hi Jose..thank you for your response,

I don't know exactly what you meant by "connected to the Internet". I have
broadband cable. I am behind a router (LAN) that is hooked up to the cable
modem which is "permanently" connected to the internet. If that is considered
being connected to the internet then I reckon that I was indeed connected to
the internet.

I did not run the SP2 setup via Windows Update. I downloaded the SP2 Network
installation Package and burned it to a CD. I copied the SP2 setup file to a
folder I made up in the C directory prior to running it. I also tried running
the SP2 setup straight from the CD I had burned with the same results.

I have another computer on my network that I have SP2 installed on and never
had any problems with that. I have even installed SP2 straight from that same
CD and it works fine.

Thanks again

I tried installing SP2 directly after the XP installation and it did not work
either. Got the same results.

Not much help except to say I've got a pc here that does exactly the
same....works fine at SP1.
Seems to trash the hard disc using full SP2 download or win update, The
other 5 pc's upgraded fine to SP2.

Did you disable any anti-virus and firewall software during the
SP2 installation (with no connection to an ISP, of course)?
I've read of people having to uninstall their security software
temporarily during the upgrade, although I didn't. SP2 does
do a lot with OS security, so there might be a conflict going on.
