XP won't boot unless the XP cd in the cd drive

I came across a problem today that i hadn't seen before. As usual, i
looked through google groups for advice. I saw several people with the
same problem, but the solution that i found on my own i didn't see
anywhere. I'm posting this mostly for informational purposes. If this
happens to me again next week, i probably will have already forgotten,
so i can find it through google. Hopefully it might help others.

The stats:

I just bought all new equipment, An asus a7v8x-mx, an athlon xp 2400+
and all the rest.. I installed xp and it ran flawlesly. i wanted to
try booting into dos via a dos boot diskette (6.0), but i'm not
including a floppy with the system, so i ripped one from another
system, put it in, configg'd the bios etc.. booted into dos fine. I
was through, switched everything back, booted up again and got the
messsage that you get when there is no hard drive. Pulled my hair out
for a couple of hours until i noticed that in the bios where you
select boot order, the 1st boot device was hd1. I only have 1 hd so i
never thought anything about it. But further along in the menu, there
is an hd0. I switched to hd0, now the system boots and runs without a
problem. Hope this helps other people out. I'm not exactly
inexperienced (20 years) but this one had me bugged for a long time..

Rob, in the computer world numbers start at 0 not 1. So, you are right when you set the bios to boot from hd0.
