XP volume icon trouble

Yesterday the volume icon in my taskbar disappeared. For the past hour
or so, I've been reading up on different ways to fix this problem. One
way says to use the XP CD. I don't have that disc so that won't work.
Another one says that I just need to make sure a box in my control
panel is checked. It is. I've tried something with the Registry Editor
and just about every other thing that I've come across.

I found one thread that is exactly like my situation:

(original URL)
http://groups.google.com/group/micr...lume+icon+help&rnum=18&hl=en#a4e2dcf8902130f9

I tried everything posted on that thread and then some. Still nothing.
Help would be greatly appreciated.

Sometimes when you turn on the MUTE it disappears. Check the CONTROL PANEL,
Sound & Audio devices and see if the boxes are checked ofr either mute, or
display icon in toolbar. If the display doesn't show either navigate the
Volume, sounds etc tabs

is your sound working or is it just that the icon is missing?

I know you say its ticked but did you try unticking the tickbox in sound
control panel - applying and then re-ticking it?

I have no idea how to do that. and i have the same audio stuff the
computer came with.
When mine vanished, I did this: Start, control panel, sounds...
There will be a check mark for "Place volume icon..." which was checked. I
unchecked it, hit ok and went out. Then back in, and checked it, hit apply
and ok and everything was fine after that.

Ok I just tried unchecking it, clicking Ok, then rechecking it.
Nothing. I'm thinking it's a little deeper than that. Something with
the SysTray.exe application but I'm not sure.

Still nothing. I right-clicked and saved that link then I opened it and
hit yes, rebooted the computer and still the same outcome.

I downloaded that file and apparently I already had SndVol32 so that
didn't do anything either. I was looking at the Task Manager earlier
and I noticed that SysTray.Exe wasn't running. Could this have
something to do with the volume icon not being there? The weird thing
is, I still have other icons next to the clock. So I'm assuming it has
something to do with that specific icon.

That stuff didn't work. But I figured out a way to open the file when
it boots up. The only problem I have now is that it actually opens the
control panel in the middle of the screen. How do I make it just open
in the taskbar?

Hi there i had the same problem and evertime i checked the box in control
pannel a error message came up.and i was also advised to use the xp cd but i
didnt have it. the problem on my computer was that a file was missing i think
it was sndvol32.exe so wot i done was i got my mate to find it on his
computer and then got him toemail it over but you will have to change the
name of the file to send it then rename it back to what it was then put it in
where he found it i.e. c/windows/win32 im not sure if this is the right place
for it thats just off the top of my head.
hope this helps

I give up. I'm not trying anything else. I just hope I haven't screwed
up anything too badly. My next alternative is taking it to the Geek
Squad people.

Don't do that (GS), it would be the computer equivalent of letting
Larry, Curly & Moe work on your plumbing. I've not watched the
thread, as you've had a number of replies. Can you summarize the
issue with the volume control. If you use Broadband - perhaps you
know someone skilled at PCs that might do a remote assistance.

Ok. Here's a summary. I'm running XP SP2 and one day my volume control
icon disappeared in the notification area. I read up on how to fix it
and put those methods into action. Nothing has worked so far. I'm
assuming that when the icon left, so did my system sounds.
