XP versus 95

My Windows xp just died for the 3rd time ... so for the 3rd time I've
taken it to the repair guy ...who says he'll have to reload xp, that my
data can be recovered piecemeal, but that my software is gone. This
never happened to me with 95 .... so .... I'm thinking.... why not put
95 on the computer? What is the downside? I'm a home user doing
primarily music, photos, and text processing.

TIA

Find a different repair guy, not one at BIGSTORE USA. This one is taking
the easy way out instead of finding out what's wrong. Can you boot into
Windows at all?

This is not normal, there is most likely something in your PC that is
failing. Simply re-loading XP is not a solution, the real problem need to be
found and fixed.

As for Windows 95, best left on the shelf.

This guy spent a day trying to get XP up .... at home it gave an
immediate "Disk read error, press ,,,,, " .... he can get it up to a
text screen now ... but says he can't fix it. I think he's good.

My Windows xp just died for the 3rd time ...

What does "died" mean? Exactly what happened? What were the sysmptoms? If
you got an error message, please quote it verbatim.

so for the 3rd time I've
taken it to the repair guy ...who says he'll have to reload xp, that

It depends on the answer to the questions above, but that sounds to me very
much like the repair guy is incompetent.

This never happened to me with 95 .... so .... I'm thinking.... why

The downsides are

- it probably won't support all your hardware
- lots of newer software won't run on it
- it will have greater security risks, since it hasn't been patched for
years
- if you do have problems, you'll find it more difficult to get help. Just
as an example,
I've forgotten most of what I used to know about it.

and so on. Personally I wouldn't even conside it.

This message seems to mean that the disk has died. The way to fix it is to
install a new disk.

Unless you have a Win95 installation disk, your only choice is to install
XP.

Besides, although Win95 was a very maked improvement over Win 3.1, it now
belongs to the dustbin of history.

You'd be far better off looking at something like Kubuntu, a very good user
friendly modern Linux distribution instead of Windows 95.

If he was any good he would have recommended a backup solution the first
time he repaired your computer. It sounds like you have a bad hard drive.

If the harddrive is screwed, Kubuntu or Kuboto or Kawasaki will
not solve the problem. Jeez...

Oh, please. You have hardware failure. Find a different tech person and have
them fix and/or replace the failing hardware. Software solutions
(installing an operating system for ex.) will be useless in your case.

I'm not even going to address putting Win95 on a machine. Let's just say it
would be stupid and leave it at that.

If the "Repair Guy" was worth a damn, he'd return the machine with a
Image of the machine at delivery. Or at the least know enough about
PC maintenance to offer to make one for the customer.

There is something definitely wrong with the hardware and
there also needs to be a better desription of how the computer
had died.

And as for seeking a system to use for primarily music, photos,
and text processing, the proper avenue to follow is a media
machine, viz., a Mac, and certainly not Windows 95. Even
Windows 98SE has a more credible performance than Windows 95.

Why go back to such an old operating system like Win95? If XP isn't doing it
for you, then look at a modern, powerful and innovative operating system
like GNU/Linux. You'll find it rock stable and immune to viruses. It comes
with 18,000 packages of free software and is easier to install than any of
the Windoze versions. Go here to checkout out the distros available:

BS. This is certainly normal for far too many Windoze users. Some are
re-installing this toy operating system every few months because it becomes
unstable.

The consensus of the NG suggested that there were 'hardware'
problems at the root of the problem.

W95b is just fine for word processing ,image editing, audio editing.
Works fine with ethernet broadband, CDRW, and SCSI devices.
latest firefox works, so does spybot+destroy. Shares file and printers
happlily with XP. Yes I still use it,
..

USB and DVD recording well not really, bought a cheap laptop here with
Xp.

Yes Gnu Gnu will work on any old piece of junk.
No one tries to get in because there would be nothing there.

Thank you for telling what someone completely ignorant of windows thinks.

You're welcome. I'm sure that you'll eventually learn to appreciate Windoze.
