XP- USB and ASUS motherboard problem.

I am running XP Pro on an ASUS P4PE motherboard. The case I have, has
provision for 6 USB ports- 4 on the back pane and 2 on the front. When I
connect many USB peripherals to the front 2 USB's -it comes up with Unknown
Device" but when the same perihperals are connected to the back pane USB's,
they are correctly named.
The peripherals are 2 brands of scanner-Canon & HP, digital card
reader/writer, HP digital camera.
Can anybody assist ???? Is there a patch or work around to overcome the
problem?
I have also asked ASUS for technical assistance.
