i am trying to upgrade from ME to xp home. i get error
message: Library Load Failure err 1157 485 during system
examination stage. any ideas please?

Run the upgrade advisor and see if you have any incompatable hardware,
drivers, or software with xp. Post back with details.

Your best bet is not to upgrade at all. Do a clean
install as some of ME's files will be left and cause
prolems someday. At least this has been my experience. MS
should have done a recall on ME as it is probably the
worst piece of programing ever written.

Even before installing clean, the user should return to his previous setup
and run the upgrade advisor as Phil suggests as the user may have hardware
or software that might cause a problem that will prevent XP from installing
or causes instability thereafter.

They can do this as follows:
At the ME desktop, place the XP CD in the drive, when the setup screen
appears, select "Check system compatibility."

Hardly any such files will be left, and those will probably be drivers
needed for legacy hardware not covered by XP native ones. Anything else
left will not get used anyway. The upgrade over 9x systems to XP leaves
a very clean state - apart from retaining installed software which may
otherwise be tricky to restore, and IMO is what should be done in the
first instance.

But this appears to be a case of a defective CD failing to load one file
needed in the hardware assessment. There is a strong possibility that
there will be other troubles if the OP continues, clean or not. It may
be a matter of compatibility of the CD drive with the disk, but
certainly try a different CD. If necessary borrow one of the same
general type, to use with the troublesome CD's Product Key
