Hardly any such files will be left, and those will probably be drivers
needed for legacy hardware not covered by XP native ones. Anything else
left will not get used anyway. The upgrade over 9x systems to XP leaves
a very clean state - apart from retaining installed software which may
otherwise be tricky to restore, and IMO is what should be done in the
first instance.
But this appears to be a case of a defective CD failing to load one file
needed in the hardware assessment. There is a strong possibility that
there will be other troubles if the OP continues, clean or not. It may
be a matter of compatibility of the CD drive with the disk, but
certainly try a different CD. If necessary borrow one of the same
general type, to use with the troublesome CD's Product Key
