I had xp pro on my computer, but it started acting funny
so I decided to reformat. I format my hard drive(80 gb
western digital 3 partion) but I have XP upgrade, so I had
to install win 98 first then when I tried to upgrade to XP
half way through it says "C: is corrupted and and
installation can't continue hit F3 to quit" what should I
do? I ran scandisk and there were no errors. Help me
please.

Hi,

Before you bother with reinstalling, check the integrity and health of the
drive. Download a diagnostic tool from the manufacturer of the hard drive.
Use it to check the state of the drive, it may be in need of replacement.

Incidentally, if your Win98 disk is a retail or generic version, there is no
need to install it first. Just boot the WinXP CD and when it does the
compliance check just insert the Win98 disk. When it is done scanning and
verifying, setup will continue. If all you have is a Recovery CD set, you
will need to install first. However, after installing copy the Win98 cabs
(usually under C:\Windows\options\cabs) to a CD and use this for future
compliance checks, it often works.

Well i will check out the diagnostic tools, but it has 98
on it now and it is running. The version of xp that i have
is an upgrade version so it wont do a clean install.

No, not true. The requirement to use an upgrade version is to
*own* a previous qualifying version's installation CD (not an OEM
restore CD), not to have it installed. When setup doesn't find a
previous qualifying version installed, it will prompt you to
insert its CD as proof of ownership. Just insert the previous
version's CD, and follow the prompts. Everything proceeds quite
normally and quite legitimately.

Hi,

Any upgrade version can do a clean install as long as you show it the
qualifying media disk as I already described.
