XP upgrade from 98

Following upgrade from windows 98 to home XP, system can
not read drives D: and E:. System reports drives not
formated. Drives have data and must be preserved. Nothing
was done to drives during upgrade.
 
How are your drives formatted? Is your XP drive NTFS and
your others FAT32 or what? Are they just partitions of
the XP drive or are they separate hard drives all
together? If they are separate drives, try unplugging
them, booting the pc, shut the pc down, and replugging
them.
