xp upgrade causes instability

i upgraded my machine to xp professional. now it's
unstable, i.e., freezes up all the time.

Did you run the Upgrade Advisor?
Check for the latest BIOS update?
Check for updated Video card drivers? (That would have shown up in the
Upgrade Advisor Report)
And finally, is your machine up to spec for Windows XP?

i did not run the upgrade advisor. what i did was a
clean install, then loaded my docs back. that's it.

The Upgrade Advisor is on the CD. If you put the CD in and let it autorun, a
menu comes up with an option "Do You want to check System Compatibility"

BIOS updates you get from the website of your Motherboard manufacturer.
