Is it possible to backup the update files for Windows XP so if I do a clean
reinstall I don't have to again download all the updates? If possible, which
folder are the files kept in?

Thanks
Michael

You could download all the updates from the WU Catalog or Download Center and burn them to a CD:

Thanks!

I've been wondering about this myself.

As often as I reinstall my system, I'd like to be able to
"pre-empt" Microsoft, which seems to take about 2 - 3 weeks
to reinstall everything.

And I don't use SP 2, but I'd like to have it "just in case
I change my mind."

(I don't use SP 2 because I've found conflicts with stuff on
my computer that I prefer to SP 2. I have NEVER found that
XP's restore function works normally for me, but SP 2
corrupts my Go Back from my Norton 2003 System Works)

If anyone has any better suggestions than SP 2 OR Go Back
2003, I'm wide open.

My computer is an AMD 1.8 Duron, ASUS A7V8X-X mobo, 512 mb,
3D Fusion nVidia GeForce MX 4000 AGP8X 128 mb vga
80 Gb ext HDD. BIOS current 07/05.

I want to swap the Duron for an Athlon, but that's an
upgrade for the future, as I'm a retiree on Social Security.

Hello, I have GoBack3 Delux (last issue from Roxio) installed with sp2,
found that before installing sp2 needed to disabled GoBack, then reenable
GoBack after a reboot.
Besides downloading from the catalog site for allready installed
updates you might try after downloading a new update (no reboot). Go to the
catalog site and download the new update for backup. When I do this the
update is loaded in my WU folder in seconds. My connection is very slow, so I
am making the assumption that the update on my unit is copied and the catalog
site redirects to the WU folder.
take care.

Not if they have been installed. One option is before installing, after
going to the WU site and seeing the updates available click on the more
info link, and go to the KB article or Technet bulletin. From there
click on the link for the file for your OS version which will take you
to a download link. Download the executable file and save it to a CD
for future use.

Another option is to download from the Windows Update Catalog.
