XP UPDATES - Security Bulletin MS03-011

At the Windows Update site I am advised that I need to update for MS03-011
"Flaw in Microsoft VM"

Within the FAQ's I am advised that the update is needed if the version
number is 3809 or less. When I check my version (via cmd and JVIEW) I see
the version is 3810, so apparently I don't need to update.

So, why does the update site advise that I need the update. That is my basic
question. Additionally, could the version number shown via cmd JVIEW be
incorrect.

Thanks

Hello,

Their is more than one item that is checked. If Windows Update is showing
you need to apply it, then I would recommend it. The liklihood is that you
have files on your system that are not updated.

If Jview.exe is version 3810 but one of the other files listed below is
not, then you need the update -

17-Mar-2003 19:05 5.0.3810.0 404,752 Javart.dll
13-Mar-2003 18:33 5.0.3810.0 172,304 Jview.exe
17-Mar-2003 19:05 5.0.3810.0 946,960 Msjava.dll

The detection actually keys on Msjava.dll, so this is likely an older
version on your system.

Shain, Thanks for the heads-up. I considered your advice and applied the
update from MS03-011.

A follow up question: why in the Microsoft FAQ concerning the MS03-011
Bulletin was the 3810 version of JView
mentioned as the key to determining one's need to download the fix. Based on
that, I believed from the getgo that I was safe.

I am glad I followed up, and thanks again for the help

Hello,

It is possible your situation is somewhat unique, however, I will do some
testing to determine how you could have build 3810 for jview and yet still
be prompted to update with MS03-011. After I have tested, I will see if we
can update the bulletin if needed.
