XP update wont run

I click on the update icon which I have set to download
atomaticaly, but the download progres box opens and
nothing happens, my computer doesnt hang but the progress
bar doesnt move.
This started happening about a month ago.

did you just get this computer? with the info you've given.... could
it be possible that you have a lot of updates on a dial up connection,
for example service pack 1?
