Do not down load any up dates from microsoft!
I did today and when i rebooted after install of 4
critical updates it wiped out all my stuff.
My address book, My Documents Folder, all of my favorites
on IE5. and all my folders in Outlook express.
todays date 9-12-03. I used the restore software and went
bake 1 mont at a time all the way to 6 months back and
all this stuff was gone.
I Repeat do not use micosoft updates you will be sorry!

i update every wednesday evening 9;00pm and got one
update this past wednesday evening. have got at least
one each week past few weeks....no problems with
logoff/logon or screensaver or general problems.

have you run anti-virus and/or other security stuff.
kept up with other updates....
========you are one in thousand-----------

My sympathies! Keep in mind that the data is still there,
just not accessible. For best results, don't use your
machine much until you get some replies on this forum. I
feel pretty confident that the folks on this board can
help you get back to normal.
I have had problems from updates myself, and know how
ticked you must be.

You can't make a blanket statement based on your experience. I'm sorry you
had trouble, but speaking for myself I have all current updates installed
and have not had the problem you have had, and I think that is true for
most.

You will be even more sorry if you don't apply the updates to shore up
the security holes that these patches fix. Why do the patches exist if
you don't need them? All patches installed on both my computers and not
a single problem with either

Den,

You advice is without warrant and it would be extremely risky to advise
people not to use Windows Update.
As recent issues have shown if you use Windows Update to keep your PC up to
date with security and critical updates you will not fall victim to attacks
such as the Blaster worm, etc etc.

I would suggest you resolve your systems problems before making such a
sweeping generalisation and providing such "dangerous" advice.

The trick is to always do a full backup before updating.
I've had two patches that clobbered my system and one
that caused smaller issues. (One of the ones I got
yesterday was a killer for me too.)

Norton Ghost came to the rescue each time.

Terrible advice.

I download updates from Microsoft all the time, and have never
had a problem. The same is true of millions of other folks. What
you did wrong to cause your problem I don't know, but nobody
should assume they will have the same problem that you did.

It is extremely important to keep up with the Microsoft critical
updates. Anyone who doesn't do so is looking for trouble.
