After a recent auto-update XP freezes occasionally. CPU
use stays at 100% after new boot. I get near normal
operation after I find the process using all the CPU
power and shut it down. First is was 'Quicken Family
Lawyer' - I uninstalled that, then it was fxssvc.exe
(sic) and I uninstalled that, and now it's cceventmgr.exe
and I just ignore the warning and shut it down so I can
use the computer.
Once before I was able to remove this problem with family
lawyer and fax service by using 'GoBack' to revert the
disk to a time before the problem started and I got
excellent performance - until now. This time I have no
revert points before the problem started - and I don't
know where they went. I did a complete virus scan about
the time the revert points end - the system restore
points end also! Coincidence or not?
Since I feel the problem is in the operating system I
tried to use the XP CD - without success. Previously I
have resolved problems by using the system repair, system
restore, or system upgrade. Now I'm told the system can
not be loaded in my partition - that I will have to
reformat (and loose all my data) - OUCH!
Help would be appreciated. I am using the Home version of
XP with SP1 and the latest updates - I think.

Can you boot into Safe Mode (F8 key on boot, but before the Windows logo)?
If you can get into Safe Mode, go to System Restore and Select a Restore
Point from the day before that Update was installed, or as close to that
date as you can get.

Unfortunately there are none - I don't know where they
went to but they are gone and the 'GoBack' points are
gone also.

Goback and xp have compatability problems. Try going to Symantec's site for
information on how to get rid of goback.
