How to I set the XP taskbar so I can drag applications onto it?
You can't. The Task Bar is a place where running programs are shown,
and they are shown automatically; whenever you start a program, a
button for it will be added to the taskbar, and removed when you close
the application.
Perhaps you don't mean the Task Bar, but the Quick Launch Bar. The
Quick Launch Bar is not the Task Bar, and not even a *part* of the
Task Bar. It's a separate toolbar that resides *on* the Task Bar by
default, but can by dragged off it and docked on whatever side of the
screen you prefer.
The Quick Launch Bar contains shortcuts that can be used to start
applications. If the Quick Launch Bar is visible, simply drag
shortcuts from the desktop to it.
If the Quick Launch bar is not visible, enable it: right-click a blank
part of the Task Bar, choose Toolbars, then Quick Launch. Make sure
the Task Bar is unlocked first; right click on a blank spot, and
uncheck Lock taskbar if it's checked.
ALso, hot to I get the "minimize desktop" icon to show up.
Create a text file in Notepad as follows:
[Shell]
Command=2
IconFile=explorer.exe,3
[Taskbar]
Command=ToggleDesktop
Save it as Show Desktop.scf then drag it to the Quick launch bar.
Or just click on this link:

Also note that you can show the desktop instead with a keyboard
shortcut: the combination of the Windows key + D or the Windows key +
M.
