Have 52 processes running according to Task Manager. How
to tell which ones can be removed? Can't rell what the
exe. items represent. How to identify crucial ones to
save and those to be eliminated?

As "all" replied, for Microsoft Windows System Services the
blackviper.com sub-page titled "Windows Service Configurations"
is an excellent resource. To add...

What Microsoft Windows System Services you may or may not need to
run automatically will depend on how you use Windows XP. As
follows are some additional resources that may be able to help
you identify which "Task Manager processes" and Microsoft Windows
System Services are nonessential in your computing environment.

TechNet Home | Products & Technologies
Server Operating Systems| Windows Server 2003:
System Services for the Windows Server 2003 Family
and Windows XP Operating Systems

3DSpotlight Windows XP Services Tweak Guide
http://www.techspot.com/tweaks/winxp_services/print.shtml

For information on 3rd party services and applications, such as
Kerio Personal Firewall (persfw.exe) see the following Web Site.
It includes a Description and a Recommendation on what you can do
about the program.

Task List Programs
http://www.answersthatwork.com/Tasklist_pages/tasklist.htm

- Before reconfiguring your System Services I recommend that
backup your current environment. An easy method is outlined on
the 3DSpotlight web page, section titled "Login, Backup &
Restoring ".

- You may also want to create a text file of your current
configuration state by opening services.msc and choosing [Menu
bar] Action | Export List...

- Do not change any settings for the Remote Procedure Call (RPC)
Service. Many services depend on it and if it fails to start (or
hangs) problems include Service Properties Sheets not displaying,
etc. For more information see the following Microsoft Knowledge
Base Article which also describes how to use the registry editor
to configure the service to use the built-in system account.

KB314357 - "Event ID: 7000" or "Event ID: 7013" Error Message
When You Attempt to Start a Service
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?Product=winxp&scid=kb;en-us;314357

- If you misconfigure services and you get a message saying that
"Windows did not start successfully" choose "Last Known Good
Configuration" as your boot option. This will restore the
registry settings for Services (etc.) that where used in the last
successful boot. Avoid logging on using any other option because
if you do, and the logon is successfully, the Last Known Good
Configuration control set will be overwritten.

For more information about LastKnownGood see the following:

Microsoft Windows XP Professional Resource Kit Documentation
Part VI System Troubleshooting:
Chapter 28 - Troubleshooting Startup
SECTION: Restoring to the Last Known Good Configuration
http://www.microsoft.com/resources/documentation/Windows/XP/all/reskit/en-us/prmc_str_jzxi.asp

- If you misconfigure services and are unable to boot Windows XP
see the following Microsoft Knowledge Base article. It contains
information about using the Recovery Console and the commands:
Enable and Disable to modify Service startup types. Of course,
it is essential that you document any and all changes or you may
not know how to reverse them. And note that these commands only
allow you to change startup types (and will not allow you to
configure the service to use the built-in system account, etc.)

Windows XP

.

Note all of the processes, or at least the ones you don't
know. Google for them, or you can also search for them on
the HD, right-click the file, select properties and get
some info from the version tab. Then you could run
msconfig and untick the unnecessary ones to keep them from
running at start up.
