When ever i startup my computer, it takes for ever and a day to do so. I have
a brand new sony viao with 0.99GB of ram and 65% space of memory. i am unable
to run multiple programs at one because they skip. My task manager saysthat i
have about 52 processes running at all times but i dont know which ones to
stop for fear of lossing data.
please help

Try Start, All Programmes, Accessories, System Tools, Disk CleanUp to
Empty your Recycle Bin and Remove Temporary Internet Files. Delete all
but the most recent Restore Point ( Start, Programs, Accessories, System
Tools, Disk Cleanup, More options). Run Disk Defragmenter in Safe Mode.

Spyware causes many problems. If not installed download and run Adaware
and / or update Reference file
http://www.lavasoftusa.com/products/ad-aware_se_personal.php

http://www.broomeman.com/spyware/

Task Manager is useful but you could look at another freeware utility
Process Explorer, which provides similar information but adds that
little bit extra towards seeing what the running processes represent.

For further information about Process Explorer see here:

http://www.sysinternals.com/ntw2k/freeware/procexp.shtml

To ascertain which service is causing the problem select the
image name producing the high CPU usage, right click,
select Properties, Services. Note there are the full names and some
explanation of what each service does.

You will find further information on Services here:
http://www.theeldergeek.com/services_guide.htm

To trace the particular Service involved you need to turn off each
service in turn and then restore it noting what effect it has on CPU
usage. However, you need to take care and watch what other Services are
dependent on that service. When you click on the Dependencies tab allow
it a little time to display the information.

Hope this helps.

To add on to Gary's good advice, 52 processes is by no means "too many".
What matters is what they are doing, whether or not they're working
correctly and whether or not you need them.

As the system is brand new, I would also speak to the supplier about why
your new purchase that you've spent a lot of money on (Vaios are not cheap!)
does not work properly. Maybe there is a hardware fault thats stopping one
or more components from operating correctly. Just a thought!

Exactly how long is "for ever and a day"?

My personal view is that the attention many people pay to how long it takes
to boot is unwarranted. Assuming that the computer's speed is otherwise
satisfactory, it may not be worth worrying about. Most people start their
computers once a day or even less frequently. In the overall scheme of
things, even a few minutes to start up isn't very important. Personally I
power on my computer when I get up in the morning, then go get my coffee.
When I come back, it's done booting. I don't know how long it took to boot
and I don't care.

What does "they skip" mean?

My task manager saysthat i have about 52 processes running at

There's nothing unusual about 52. In fact, it's on the low side.

but i dont know which ones to stop for fear of lossing data.

Don't stop any. Your diagnosis of the problem--that you have too many
processes running--is very likely wrong. You *might* have a problem if you
have some particular processes running that impact performance, but you
should be concerned (if at all) with *which*, not how many.

I appreciate all the help thank you. My other problem is that when ever a
play a media or adio file, it skips or freezes when ever I run any other
programs such as a screen saver, open a new window or even just when I
minamize the media. I thought it just might be the program but this happens
to all my media no matter what program I use to play the file.

The most likely issue with poor performance these days is spyware. I
recommend that you go to Malke's Malware Removal site at
http://www.elephantboycomputers.com/page2.html#Removing_Malware and follow
the instructions there.

I has such Exp with WIN98 and XP now. These freeSW creates milliiaons of
files on your HD with 0K size via some kind of loop. Thus every time you do
something it takes very long to scan this files to find yours one. They would
then anounce to speed up yr computer if you give then 5.99$ Rigt, TRy going
thru yr HD and delete file with recent and same date stamp. Carefulll XP
functioning alos create some files too.

Also if you have less of Virtual storage space allocated OR Less RAM, it
goes slow too...

Hope it helps
