My XP system is freezing up periodically, even if I'm not touching it. I
checked case temp and processor temp, no problem there. I checked power
supply unit for voltages and even put in a new power supply, so it's
apparently not a voltage issue. I recently ran scannow /sfc. That went
smoothly.

I had drwatson running the last time it locked up, but the log and dump
file were empty when I rebooted. Event viewer gives no clues. I need
some ideas on how to fix this or find out what it causing the system
freezes. Any ideas, anyone?

Thanks in advance,

JM

Have you checked the RAM? There are various applications out there.

Here is one such application:

Windows Memory Diagnostic:

I have not checked the RAM, but I suppose its a good idea to do so.
Thanks for the suggestion and link.

Hi Jungle Man,

Is the system freezing while you are using it, or somewhat freezes while
you are booting up?

How much Ram is installed? How have you set up your peformance Options
in System Properties?

I retrieved the Microsoft memory diagnostic tool and tested my Micron
memory. The tool made some 12+ passes. There were no errors or issues
detected. Ironically, 15 minutes after I rebooted back into Windows XP,
the system went into deep freeze for the first time in 3 days while I
was writing an e-mail.

I wonder if the CPU onboard cache (Intel) is going bad? What else might
I look for in trying to track down the cause of system freezes? Any
helpful suggestion appreciated.

Hi creator,

Sorry for the long delay. The system freezes while the computer is in
use. It has not had a problem booting up or shutting down. 512MB Micron
RAM, all BIOS timings in spec. Performance options set to favor running
programs. DEP on for essential progs and services. Any ideas?

Are you getting a BSOD when that happens, if so what's the information that
it gives you?

Additionally - are you finding any errors in Event Viewer?

You can look those up at www.eventid.net if you want.

Hi JM,

Make sure that none of the Services within Services are disabled, but
set to Manual. Also none of your Anti-Virus Services should be set to
Automatic. Some should be set to Manual.

What Anti-Virus Program are you using that is installed?

Galen, no BSOD. If that were happening, I could figure it out, and
DrWatson would probably help. The problem is that the screen, the mouse,
the whole system... everything just freezes right in it's tracks. No
warning signals of any kind. No keyboard, no mouse movement. Even the
Networking graph in Task Manager stops moving.. The entire systems
freezes. The system clock even stops and loses time until I reboot the
system.

I suspected maybe a rootkit, but I have run three different anti-rootkit
utilities and found nothing.

Running NOD32. Well, it's installed, but not running. I only enable it
now and then to do a system scan or scan downloads. Otherwise, it
remains disabled.

I just recently (yesterday) spent a day dealing with something very similar.
I ended up heading into safe mode where I scheduled the normal stuff like
disk checking. It turned out that it ran fine in safe mode but not in
regular mode and the problem was like this in all the accounts. - I thought
it might be heat at first as the fourth fan kicked the bucket just prior, I
even wondered about the CPU having taken too much heat and maybe cracking.
It turned out that it seems fine now after having just made some room on the
drive so that I could defrag the system. Even then (it was 47% fragmented -
ouch) I ended up doing it in safe mode.

Does this happen while the PC is booted into safe mode?
