XP Suddern restarts and blue screen

Hi everyone

I've got a:
AMD athlon XP 2000+ 1.67GHz
1.00GB ram
80GB HDD
ATi radeon 9550 (256MB) Graphics Card
AC97 Via (On Board) Sound Card
LG CD DVD Combi Driv
Running Windows XP Pro SP2 OS

And for the last year or so it has been restarting for no reason, or giving
the blue screen of death (Driver_no_less_or_equal message) It restarts if I'm
listening to music, browsing the net, playinga game (just about anything)
this is waht it says in event viewer

Been everywhere for this to find an explanation. Even replaced everything
except motherboard to try an stop it - latest drivers the works and still I
keep getting these messages. Nothing here on the knowledgbase seems to come
near the problem, and as you can probablly gather its annoying. I custom
built the machine from scratch and it was working fine when I first got it. I
was running win 98 at the time, then upgraded to XP Pro fine for the first
year with XP then somewhere along the line it started going wrong, nothing
was done to the system to change the configuration. I decided to upgrad it
when the problems started to occur.
Does anyone have any ideas or had similar issues and or is able to resolve
this issue. Its driving me bonkers.

You said that your error code was Driver_no_less_or_equal which
presumably was STOP 0x000000D1: DRIVER_IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL
However your reported error message is from a STOP 0x000000BE:
ATTEMPTED_WRITE_TO_READONLY_MEMORY which is an entirely different
error.

Before proceeding further we need to clarify which error we are
dealing with.

What you can do in the meantime is to use Control Panel - System -
Advanced and click on the Settings button in the Startup and Recovery
(bottom) section. In the Startup and Recovery window click on the
checkbox for "automatically restart" to clear it then click on Apply
and OK as needed to exit.

Good luck

Hi Ron

Just to clarify I seem to get both of these errors, but at the moment I seem
to be just getting the memory error (event viewer entry)

The documentation for that error indicates that there could also be a
file name mentioned as part of the error message. Is there anything
similar to the following included in your event viewer or on the
actual blue screen?

iesprt.sys - Adress FA344443 base at FA344000 DATESTAMP 408eb71a

(the file name could be any device driver related file)

Good luck

I'll check again, but I do recall as part of the blue screen error message
one datastamp message was relating to the USB or USBPort.sys file?

After looking at the threads of this message.--
It closely resembles symptoms I experienced with an AMD3200 XP processor.
Turned out that the processor was not quite happy running at the BIOS
settings (which were supposedly correct for that processor and timing) (Not
even overclocked) Once the processor was slowed down, the problems went
away. We did find signs that the processor was running hot at rated speed.
Replaced processor, changed buss speeds for the new processor, and all was
well.

I did wonder if the machine was overheating as it seems quite warm inside,
plus the Hard Drive overheats alot, you touch it and its quite hot. Bought a
new fan a week ago and it seems to of cooled the processor down a bit its got
a top temp in the bios as 75 degrees and it was upt 65 degrees. Since putting
the fan in its cooled to 35 degrees but still resets.

How do you slow the processor down. Just so I can see if this is what is
causing the problem?

Hi Ron

Just replying to your lat post regarding file names in event viewer, when
selecting the link to go to help and support, the information that it sends
over the internet includes a file name of 'faultrep.dll' but thats about it I
cannot find any other driver or file names within the event log, just what I
have posted previous. At the moment I have only browsed the net and so far
the machine has not reset. This may becasue I'm not making it perform
intensive tasks such as game running, though I'm so fed up with it resetting
I feellike throwing it out the window. Its got me stummped. I work in the IT
industry and have never come across anything quite like this. I have built
PC's in the pasr and have never had problems like this. Any ideas?

I'd suspect the following:
- bad motherboard capacitors
- overheating (e.g. dust-packed heat sink, failed fan...)
- overclocking, including SVGA tweaks
- power supply issues
- wonky SVGA card (but you've excluded that?)
- bad or mis-matched RAM
- bad mains power
- bad electrical effects from peripherals
- VIA chipset IDE bug (yours is prolly after that)
Less likely; failing HD, file system corruption, software issues
(including malware)
