It's not a hoax, many "insider" sites are talking about this interim
release, which as I understand it is WinXPw/SP2 installed, though I don't
have anything concrete for you at the moment.

The only alpha build of Longhorn available is part of a full MSDN
subscription. You would have to pay for a subscription. That build is now
6-7 months old and was really only meant for developers to start getting a
feel for it. It did not include many of the new implementations. I would
suggest that if you want to get in on the beta releases as it releases, that
you send a note to (e-mail address removed). They will send you instructions on
how to apply for the beta program. There are no guarantees that you will get
in, but it doesn't hurt to ask.
