2 days before i recd. a memory dump in XP Pro SP2 when i plugged and
unplugged a usb device 2-3 times rapidly
to make matters worse i forcefully restarted the pc wen it was wrting the
complete memory dump..

since then xp boot time has increased to abt 3 mins. the hdd is constantly
accessed .. There are no errors reprted in the event viewer however.

I have tried everything including reinstalling SP2 , reinstalling all
drivers ... except system restore (as i have disabled it).. , defrag, delted
the memory.dmp file too
boot time is not affected even if i disable all services and startup
programs or boot in safe mode altogether

moreover i have noticed that during excessive hdd activity like copying
large files, playing games etc. the system becomes toooo slow, which was not
the case earlier

i will try chkdsk today, terminated it in b/w cos it was taking too much time

wat could have gone wrng ? .. I don't wanna format

Let chkdsk run. Seems you have created some issues by impatience.
Don't force things.

Problem finally solved.. tht xp crash had set my hdd to run in PIO mode
instead of dma

I just reset it using using registry as specified in this link
http://www.michna.com/kb/WxDMA.htm ...nd voila it's back to normal

Glad you got it fixed and thanks for posting the resolution. And try to
learn some patience so you don't create more problems for yourself.
