XP stops after displaying the welcome screen

Using XP Pro, when the PC boots it seems to run normally and then displays
the welcome screen, but after that the screen just goes blank except for
displaying the normal desktop background colour and the cursor.

There is some system activity as the hourglass appears beside the cursor
occasionally and control/alt/delete will bring up the task manager. It does
not display any real activity in processes, but the cpu graph shows some
activity, but not more than about 30 to 40 percent.

If anyone can suggest a way around this it would be appreciated.

Boot to safe mode (hit F8 just before the OS loads)

run msconfig and take all apps out of startup...

if your system now works...you will need to put back your virus checker
and
firewall...
but probably nothing else
I got into safe mode, but when I log in as Supervisor the desktop appears
with the task bar visible for about a second and then the task bar
disappears and I cant do anything.

In case it was just a screen resolution thing I tried the windows key+R to
open the Run function and typed msconfig and hit enter in the hope that it
would open msconfig, but no result

If you cannot even get to safe mode properly,,,there's certainly a problem
allright...

You might need to perform a repair installation...
but I'd run a ram test and HD diagnostic first.

also before you run a repair installation...
use your XP cd and boot the the repair console and run chkdsk (with no
switches)

if it finds just a few errors then run chkdsk /r to repair them...
