XP Startup hangs after KB834707 & KB885884

I have a problem with my system hanging after I apply critical
updates KB834707 & KB885884 to my XP Home SP2 system. These two updates
came into my system at the same time; 885884 is for MS Office and 834707
is a cumulative update for IE; I suspect it's the IE update, but welcome
any comments about either or both of these. I have another PC with a
similar config which has these two updates running just fine; the major
difference between these two systems being that the system that's OK is
running McAfee's antivirus program (V7) and the one that hangs is
running Norton Antivirus 2004. So I'm wondering if maybe there's a
compatibility problem between one of these updates and Norton Antivirus
2004. I've looked on Symantec's (Symantec markets Norton products) web
site but found nothing. I was able to back off the updates on the
hanging system by booting to Safe Mode and doing a System Restore, but I
don't like getting behind on critical updates.
If I have to I'll try reapplying just one of these updates with
Norton AV disabled & see what happens, but I thought I'd check here
first. Any and all suggestions appreciated. TIA

Had similar problems except mine just hands there saying installing
updates and does nothing. Cancelling it causes it to sit there saying
cancelling installation. 1 hour later no change to either one (tried
leaving both!).
The install on my desktop was flawless. However this one on my laptop
big problem. They both use Norton Internet Security 2003 and both are
XP Pro at SP2 so I fail to see much difference.
have tried 4 times now. No joy. How do I take off the partial
install and start again??
