XP startup and shut down taking for ever.

About four months ago, Internet explorer got disabled/corrupted on my XP
Professional operating system after I browsed a forum. I have not been able
to reload IE because it keeps looking for an older version to update. Ever
since then, I have noticed that startup and shutdown of XP take forever.
There is continuous disk access activity going on during these periods but
nothing happens on screen. I have run virus checks and everything okay in
that area. Any thoughts on why startup and shut down are taking so long?
thanks

I have a similar problem like that..
Access to the internet to any program files I download eg: MSN won't work..
And not start up.. But shut down takes a few minutes..
And nothing has come up!

I thought this had only happened to me..
Although normal internet works.. And programs I had downloaded before this
happened.. Are working..
But any updates i try to install..
Require the assitance of Norton Go Back..
To make everything go back to it's self..
I hate the fact that i didn't install it the day i got my computer..
:(
