Does anyone understand the difference between XP Professional and XP
Standard? Specifically, will XP Standard allow VPN connections?

First of all, note that there is no such thing as XP Standard. XP
comes in Professional and Home versions.

XP Professional and XP Home are exactly the same in all respects,
except that Professional has a few features (mostly related to
networking and security) missing from Home. For most (but not
all) home users, these features aren't needed, would never be
used, and buying Professional instead of Home is a waste of
money.

Also note that Professional allows ten concurrent network
connections, and Home only five.

XP Home - not 'Standard'. Use of Standard suggests you may be confusing
with Office XP.

I'm not sure specifically about VPN, but as Home does not support the
IIS, I think it unlikely it supports VPN
