XP (SP2) boots up normally and runs ok for about 60 seconds. It then stalls
for 3 or 4 minutes and no programs can be launched. Task Manager does not
indicate much processor activity so it deos not appear to be loading
anything. Then everything suddenly starts in one rush. The problem appeared
after successful removal of the "about blank" hijacker.

Have tried making a number of changes in msconfig, to ne oeffect.

Hi... I used to have the same problem, and in my case was caused by the ADSL
modem leasing DHCP with windows XP. The problem vanished when I installed a
router. Hope it helps you find the solution.

Alternatively you can use a program called Bootvis to find out what
exactly is loading during this time. I know some virus scanners delay
their loading for 1 minute, to allow everything else to load and you to
start your application before they stress the system with their own
loading, and some programs do a similar thing.

My guess would be that it is searching for the correct DNS. Several fixes might help

Q299357 - How to Reset Internet Protocol (TCP-IP) in Windows XP: http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;Q299357

DNS fails: restart windows, after you go to start/run, and type CMD, then at that prompt type: IPCONFIG /flushDNS and then :
IPCONFIG /registerDNS

Set a static ip: start/run, type:

hh %windir%\Help\tcpip.chm::/sag_tcpip_pro_manualconfig.htm
