I’m running XP Pro and have not loaded either SP3 or IE8. Is there any
advantage, or disadvantage of loading one before the other?

Does IE8 completely replace IE7 or just updates it?

I have two subdirectories under the windows directory called “IE7” and
“IE7 Updates”. Once I load IE8 can I delete these?

Also I have a subdirectory “ServicePackFiles” absolutely loaded with
files. I assume this is part of XP SP2. (?) Can this be deleted after
loading SP3?

Thanks,

Geri

The files in the 'ServicePackFiles' folder are copies of the original XP
files (presumably SP1) and are only there should you want to Uninstall the
service pack (also, SFC.exe (System File Checker) won't work properly if
it's deleted).

But if your happy about never wanting to uninstall the last service pack and
you never run SFC /SCANNOW command then go ahead and delete the whole
folder.

Install Service Pack 3 first because if you install IE8 before SP3 and IE8
doesn't work for you, you will have a problem uninstalling it unless you
uninstall SP3 first. Make sure you prepare for SP3. Then if you still want
IE8, make sure you prepare for it thoroughly also.

Per MVP PA Bear - "I would strongly recommend disabling your anti-virus
application and any anti-spyware applications (other than Defender) before
installing (or uninstalling) an IE upgrade. If you're running a
third-party firewall, I would recommend disabling it and then enabling the
Windows Firewall before installing (or uninstalling) an IE upgrade.

"Tip: Reboot twice after installing IE8 Final. Make certain that your
anti-virus application, any anti-spyware applications (other than
Defender), and your third-party firewall (if any)
is supported in IE8 Final before you decide install it."

No-charge support for Internet Explorer 8 installation, set-up and usage
(only) is available via the phone based on your locale through 31 December
2009. Customers must be running Windows XP or Windows Vista in a non-domain
environment.

IE8 is an upgrade of IE7, just like IE7 was an upgrade ogf IE6.

Best not, no.

I would not. Since you installed SP3 as a separate install, then
whenever you will need to repair the XP, with SFC, then these folders
may be needed.
