XP SP2 Wiped out system

When we installed SP2 onto our portable computer, on reboot
we received the blue screen of death. Apparently our
registers were destroyed. We are now re installing
original software, but we will not be bringing up SP2 on
any computers in the system untill we know it is safe.

Future policy requires proof that upgrade is safe before
installation system wide.

That's always been MS's advice to pro-IT installations, and it still
is - test on non-production PCs first.

It's only us consumerland shmucks that are expected to swallow all
patches straight from the maw of Windows Update. And in fact, SP2
enables that; automatic download (OK) automatic install (uhhh...)

That's particularly nasty, given that consumers:
- don't have the skill set to manage disasters
- don't have spare PCs lying around
- often don't have effective backups or backup devices
