XP SP2 restart problem.

Hi All,

I've just bought a laptop with XP Pro SP2 pre-installed. The problem
is that it won't restart - when I select restart from the 'Turn off
computer' dialogue, I see the normal shutdown sequence ('Logging
off...','Saving your settings...', 'Windows is shutting down...') then
the screen goes blank but the power LED remains on. Nothing else
happens. To restart the machine I have to depress the power key for
five seconds to get it to power off, then hit it again to get the
machine to power on. Note that the subsequent power on proceeds as
normal - I don't get any messages about Windows being shutdown
improperly.

A shutdown initiated from the 'Turn off computer' dialogue proceeds
normally, and the power is killed on completion.

There are no relevant entries in the logs.

Software:
This behaviour occurred out of the box. At the time the machine had
the following installed on it:
Windows XP SP2
Office SBE
Panda Platinum Internet Security
Nero MediaPlayer
Nero OEM
InterVideo WinDVD

I've since installed a few other apps and done quite a lot of work on
this machine, so I'd like to avoid reinstalling the OS and starting
from scratch - plus, I can live with this; it's just a right old PITA.
Anyone seen this or have any ideas?

Thanks in advance for any help...

Cheers - Adam...

Hi

Have you tried the following articles by Jim Eshelman:

http://aumha.org/win5/a/tshoot.htm

Oh superb.

I had already tried the shutdown page, but nothing described my
problem and none of the measures for similar problems had any effect.
So I went to the troubleshooting page and, as suggested, tried booting
the machine in safe mode - except that it didn't boot and now won't
boot at all (even when selecting last known good configuration). It
goes to the same blank screen, power LED on but no response to
anything except the power key.

Any other suggestions?

Cheers - Adam...
