SP2 is considered a major "Critical Update" and updates over
5 million lines of code in Windows XP. You'll experience
stronger security and a bit more performance by installing SP2.

I have not found any evidence or documentation to support the above
contention that SP2 will provide improved performance.

Is this MVP simply mistaken or can his assertion be supported?

TIA

He is completely wrong. I have done extensive benchmarking and there is
virtually NO difference.

Actually it's true. But notice he or she states "a bit more
performance". By making some of the code a little more efficient and
by optimizing some of the older dll's you will notice a slight
improvement. This is usually on the order of only 2-3kb\s more
throughput as well as slightly better I\O operations. So don't expect
miracles but in this day and age any improvement is just that, an
improvement. {]:~)

Can you point me to a link where this is explained? I haven't been able to
find one.

Also, isn't it possible that since SP-2 now runs more services, the benefits
of any code and dll optimization may be nullified?

microsoft.com
about sp2
seems that the code re-writes are the critical updates you
have been downloading all year. and it is somewhat more
secure in the ie browser to try and control hijackers. but
hackers are still trying exploits , so we will see.

No "benchmarking" here, but according to Task Manager, SP2 is the same as SP1
(with dead “Security†Center) or slower.

I agree. I seen nothing indicating better performance. It's basicly the same
as before.

Extensive?
Where's the results and what tools did you use.
I doubt that there has been enough time for one guy
between the 8th and now to set up an extensive test
environment for SP2.
Especially one on P/C running HOME. ;)

You're missing a really cool Windows O/S.

I like to call SP2 ...Xtensive XPerience.

Windows XX. :P

I have been testing SP2 for several months.

Really, RC1 wasn't out for months was it?
RC2 came out in July.
Were you a bata tester?
Can you varify that?

:)

It would be more accurate to say XP returns to the first-install
performance! If you have a very powerful system it might not show up but on
my XP2200 box you can feel the improvement.

As you suspect, it's an unsupported assertion. Carey and
the Unknown Pea-brain have no evidence and no
explanations. If perfromance isn't degraded you should
consider yourself well off.

At the least, it did not degrade performance. I noticed a slight
improvement.
