XP SP2 deployment question

When I installed SP2, I lost access to my desktop icons. I can still use the
start button and My computer. In My Computer, I can access the desktop.
What fix should I use for this - other than uninstalling SP2?

When I go into Safe Mode, I cannot see anything except for the words that I
am in safe mode in teh four corners. There, I can only access the Task
Manager.

Your Desktop Icons Are Missing in Windows XP
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;330170&Product=winxp

Visit http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks.htm and scroll down to
Item No. 195 (right column), click on "Restore Desktop Icons and
Taskbar".

Install the registry fix, then reboot your computer.

Thanks Carey. That did not work.

One other curiosity to this issue - when I click on an icon on my desktop, I
receive an error message that windows explorer has encountered a problem
with the following signature:
AppName: explorer.exe AppVer: 6.0.2900.2180 ModName: shlwapi.dll

ModVer: 6.0.2900.2180 Offset: 00020665

After that, Dr. Watson comes up and I am frozen out until I disable the
drwatson process in Task Manager. I hope that can help you in assisting me.
Thanks again for any assistance.
