XP SP2 and DCHP

I've been running an XP Pro machine obtaining a DHCP IP
address from a Windows 2000 server. I just applied XP SP2,
and now I can't get an IP address. I don't even get a
0.0.0.0 or private IP address. Sometimes, when I run
ipconfig, I get blank results. Other times I get
a "Internal error. The system cannot find the file
specified." Looking in the event viewer, I found other
applications with a "system cannot find the file
specified" error.

If it's of any value, the NIC is a 3Com 3C920 docking
station NIC.

Worse case scenario, I could always uninstall SP2, but I
support a lot of XP pro machines that will be utilizing
the "windows auto update."

Any ideas? In the meanwhile, more tests...

I am having the same problem (sort of) and have asked on
several other boards. My problem is that I get my ip
address from my microcom router just fine, but when i try
to access shared resources from the windows 2000 server I
get "\\foxtrot\software is not accessible. You may not
have permission to use this network resource."

I can access this from my other computers (winxp pro
sp1a) but not from this win xp pro sp2 computer. I have
the windows xp firewall turned off because i have zone
alarm installed, but even with zone alarm turned off also
it still doesn't work.

Try un-installing and re-installing the NIC in Device Manager.

I would neither expect a previous zone alarm firewall to work
flawlessly with the changed networking mechanisms within XP SP2, nor
does it make much sense to use two different software firewalls on the
same machine. So try deinstalling SP2 (this seems to work quite well
from my experience), completely (!) deinstall all firewalls and other
software that is closely networking-related and then reinstall SP2.

Well folks, I appreciate the suggestions; however,
something else worked out. I went to 3Com's website,
downloaded an updated NIC driver (although it's pre-sp2).
I was worried when I checked on the machine, and the
driver was still installing an hour later. In fact, I left
it running over night. When I checked this morning, it was
still installing. Fearing something horrible happened, I
just rebooted the machine gracefully, and all my troubles
went away...

Now is appropriate for the twilight zone theme music.
