XP SP2 4k cluster size limit - possible solution

Hello -

Wanted this information archive so someone in the future might benefit from
it.

I BELIEVE this process works to get around problems with the 4k cluster size
limit on XP SP2. Someone might be able to verify my findings.

Due to a recent hardware escapade, I had to move data and reinstall XP - and
ran once again into the 4k cluster size limit on the boot drive. The usual
cannot read drive, please reboot bit of nonsense.

What I decided to do to try and fix this is load the XP SP1 disc Recovery
console and run fixmbr and fixboot. After that, the system was able to boot
SP2 off the large cluster drive (32k). Apparently the bootstrap that SP1
writes to the disk is large cluster friendly and is where the problem
resides, but didn't appear to cause any problems during the SP2 load.

Others might be able to confirm this with their own tests. I have had enough
loading/ unloading/ moving/ ghosting/ copying for one week...

Just an FYI that I hope makes it into the deja/Google Usenet archive and
gives someone some help as a possible solution for the 4k limit.
