XP SP1 will not install

I have just reinstalled XP home onto a new HD. After
running windows update I get a list of all critical
updates and the pre-req service pack 1. I choose to
download it and it downloads 1.9Mb, flashes some other
window and then asks me to restart my computer. (I think
the entire download should be about 30Mb and there's no
way it dl'ed it all in 5 secs)
Upon rebooting and returning to the update site, SP1
remains to be installed. My installation history however
states that is has been istalled successfully.
I've tried 4 times now, and have used the security
updates and protected against blaster and other viruses.

Thanks for any help,
Brad

If I might suggest getting the "network version" of SP1a:

SP1a
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/pro/downloads/servicepacks/sp1/sp1lang.asp
(134 MB | 5.5 hours @ 56K | 11 minutes @ T1)

Followed by the rollup:

Download the Update Rollup 1 for Microsoft Windows XP from here:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...00-d7be-48e3-abcc-961602bd72c2&displaylang=en
Short Link: http://tinyurl.com/r4lh

Then, for all other patches/updates:
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=323166

Burn them to CD for later use, if you like..

Also, order this CD:
http://www.microsoft.com/security/protect/cd/order.asp
Has all the updates through October 2003.
