Download and install all critical updates. You may have to reboot and
revisit this site many times if you are as behind as you say. If you have a
cruddy antivirus and are not behind a router/NAT device - your machine may
even be infested with viruses/trojans/worms as well.
Actually you can bypass SP1 and go straight to SP2, from the windows update
site. Open Internet Explorer, go to Tools | Windows Update, click on the
custom option and see what updates are offered. Start with SP2.
Do you have a current AV program, other anti-malware programs and firewall
installed? If not your system is probably infected since going online
without a firewall will almost certainly result malware getting on the
system. The system needs to be cleaned and running well before applying a
service pack.

I doubt they realize many in the newsgroups ignore such posts since they are
often difficult to translate to English.
On the other hand, a good way to limit your responses if you feel you may
receive to many answers.
