XP SP1 kills ATI IT7 USB Key board and Mouse

I ned to install a fresh XP Pro to clean out too many
installed drivers. I have an ATI IT7 mother board. I
installed latest BIOS and USB drivers from ATI. XP Pro
install goes fine and works. When I install Service Pack
1 I lose all keyboard and mouse function when the Windows
logo appears. I can not log in or use keyboard or mouse.
This is a legacy free comouter so keyboard and mouse use
USB.

The original installation works fine. Service Pack 1
components were installed incrememtally so it works with
latest critical updates in that installation.

How do I do a new XP Pro install including SP1 without
losing keyboard and mouse functionality?

Try uninstalling your keyboard programs and installing SP1. Then reinstall
your keyboard programs.

Thanks. Perhaps I did not make myself clear. I install
XP from the CD and it works fine. I can log in and browse
the web. When I then install Service Pack 1 the keyboard
and mouse work fine at boot until the Microsoft logo
appears. I then lose all keyboard and mouse functions,
which makes it hard to log in or use the computer. No
keyboard or mouse for Safe mode either.

This is a known problem that occurs when the BIOS in your computer
does not properly interface to the USB driver updates found in SP1.

Go and get the latest Intel INF updates from the Intel Website.
(Version 6.0.1.1002 as of the date of this post.)
Download the readme file from the Intel site and read the
contents. It will describe both your problem and its solution.

Note: You *may* want to use a normal PS/2 mouse and keyboard
just for the purpose of installing SP1. The *second* time you
reboot after installing SP1 -- you should then be able to go back
to your USB mouse and keyboard without trouble.

The above is a commonly-used workaround for the USB
keyboard and mouse problem when installing SP1.

WXP install recommendations:

1. You have an Abit IT7 motherboard, not an ATI. You may
have an ATI Video Card -- but ATI do not (yet) make
motherboards.

2. Update your Motherboard FlashBIOS to the latest-'n-greatest
available -- *before* you install WXP. I assume from your post
that you have done this -- but Item 1 above may prove me
wrong -- so I am covering that base again regardless.

2. Use the latest Motherboard Chipset drivers rated for your
particular motherboard. Get these from the *chipset* (Intel)
manufacturer's website -- not the motherboard manufacturer's
website where the chipset drivers may be out-of-date. These
drivers get installed *immediately* after the base install of WXP.
They get installed before you go on the net, before you go to
Windows Update, before you do *anything* else.

3. Always assume that the drivers and firmware you are using
are broken until proven otherwise. DO NOT assume that just
because something is "new" -- that the supplied drivers or
equipment are OK.

Check with the hardware manufacturer's tech support and
confirm you are using the proper (latest) firmware and drivers
for your particular hardware. For example, it is very common
for brand-new motherboards to come with outdated FlashBIOS.

Best I can do for now. <tm>
